THE HOLY SPIRIT

A Study Guide

The Coming and Work of the Holy Spirit

SCRIPTURE

COMMENTS

John 7:38-39 NKJV He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." (39) But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Believe first then receive Holy Spirit.

John 14:16-17 NKJV And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— (17) the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

Holy Spirit is another helper of the same kind as Jesus.

World cannot receive Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit will be in us.

John 14:26 NKJV But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

Holy Spirit will 1) teach us all things, 2) bring to our remembrance things said by Jesus

John 15:26 NKJV "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.

Holy Spirit will testify, bear witness of Jesus.

John 16:7-11 NKJV Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. (8) And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (9) of sin, because they do not believe in Me; (10) of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; (11) of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

Jesus sends us the Holy Spirit.

Function of Holy Spirit to the world is convicting of sin, righteousness, and judgment.

John 16:12-15 NKJV "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. (13) However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. (14) He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. (15) All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

Jesus had things to say that couldn't be said then; however, Holy Spirit will

  1. guide us into all truth,

  2. speak to us what He hears Jesus say,

  3. tell us things to come,

  4. glorify Jesus,

  5. declare to us the things that belong to Jesus.

BEING BORN AGAIN AND RECEIVING THE HOLY SPIRIT

John 20:21-23 NKJV So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." (22) And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. (23) If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

When were the disciples “born again” as we would think of it?

I believe that it was here—it is a picture from Genesis and God breathing the breath of lives into Adam. This was not receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the promise of the Father.

Acts 1:4-5 NKJV And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me; (5) for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

Jesus tells them to wait for the promise of the Father—baptism with the Holy Spirit.

Acts 1:8 NKJV But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

When the Holy Spirit comes, they will receive power.

Acts 2:1-4 NKJV When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. (2) And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. (3) Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. (4) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Holy Spirit came on the Day of Pentecost

Acts 2:33 NKJV Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

Peter identifies the experiences of Pentecost as them receiving the promise of the Father.

Acts 2:38-39 NKJV Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (39) For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."

Peter tells them (and us) to

  1. repent,

  2. be baptized for remission of sins, and

  3. you (and us) shall receive gift of Holy Spirit. This promise of the Father is to us, our children, to all, as many as the Lord will call,

Acts 5:32 NKJV And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him."

God gives the Holy Spirit to those who obey Him.

Acts 8:14-16 NKJV Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, (15) who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. (16) For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Samaria had receive preaching, healing, deliverance through Philip's ministry and had believed and were baptized. They had become Christians by our definition—they had professed belief and been baptized.

However, they had not received the Holy Spirit.

CONTINUING ACTIVE WORK OF HOLY SPIRIT

Acts 13:2 NKJV As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, "Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."

Holy Spirit spoke of action to be taken by the group of believers that related to the work assigned by the Holy Spirit to Barnabas and Saul.

Acts 13:4 NKJV So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.

Holy Spirit sent out the workers

Acts 16:6-7 NKJV Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. (7) After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them.

Workers are directed by the Holy Spirit. Here they were forbidden to preach in Asia and not permitted to go to Bithynia.

Acts 18:5 NKJV When Silas and Timothy had come from Macedonia, Paul was compelled by the Spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ.

Paul was compelled, constrained, pressed together, fully devoted by the Spirit to the word.

Acts 20:22-23 NKJV And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, (23) except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me.

Holy Spirit tells of what is to happen to Paul when he goes to Jerusalem.

Acts 20:28 NKJV Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

Holy Spirit makes overseers who shepherd, feed the flock.

Romans 5:5 NKJV Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

The Holy Spirit pours out the love of God in our hearts.

1 Corinthians 2:9-13 NKJV (9) But as it is written: "EYE HAS NOT SEEN, NOR EAR HEARD, NOR HAVE ENTERED INTO THE HEART OF MAN THE THINGS WHICH GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM." (10) But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. (11) For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. (12) Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. (13) These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

Holy Spirit reveals to us the deep things of God.

We have received the Holy Spirit so that we could know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

Holy Spirit gives us the wisdom and the words with which to speak of these things.

1 Corinthians 12:7 NKJV (7) But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

1 Corinthians 12:11 NKJV (11) But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

The manifestation, gifts of Holy Spirit are given to each of us for the benefit of all. This is done by the will of the Spirit.

SEALED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

Ephesians 1:13-14 NKJV In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, (14) who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

  1. Heard

  2. Trusted

  3. Believed

  4. Sealed with Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit = guarantee of our inheritance until redemption

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 NKJV (21) Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, (22) who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

God has sealed us, giving us the Holy Spirit as a guarantee.

2 Corinthians 5:4-5 NKJV (4) For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. (5) Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

The Holy Spirit is our guarantee of the resurrection that God has prepared for us.

Ephesians 4:30 NKJV And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Sealed by Holy Spirit until the day of redemption.

2 Timothy 2:19 NKJV Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: "The Lord knows those who are His," and, "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity."

The Lord knows those who are His by our sealing of the Holy Spirit.

Revelation 7:3 NKJV saying, "Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads."

Revelation 9:4 NKJV They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

The seal of God protects during the end times
